There are several diseases that can be transferred from dogs to humans, these are known as zoonotic diseases (can be transmitted from animals to humans). Not all diseases that affect our pets can be transferred to people but of the ones that can, they can potentially be serious. Below are some of the most common zoonotic diseases that dogs can pass to people.

Ringworm is a common skin disorder also known as tinea that can affect the skin on the body, scalp, feet or the groin. Ringworm is not as its name implies, caused by a worm. It is a skin infection caused by a fungus. Ringworm is contagious; it is passed by handling contaminated items such as combs, unwashed clothing and shower surfaces or by direct skin-to-skin contact between people.

Roundworms (nematodes) have long round bodies and are invertebrates (animals having no backbone). Their size ranges from those plainly visible to the naked eye to those only visible only under a microscope. Apart from the roundworm that causes trichinosis, adult roundworms live in human intestines and can cause health problems.

Tapeworms in dogs are caused by swallowing a flea infected with a tapeworm larva. A dog may eat a flea while grooming. Once the flea is digested inside the dog, the tapeworm larvae develop into an adult tapeworm. The adult tapeworm is made up of many small pieces each about the size of a grain of rice with adult tapeworms measuring 4-28 inches long. Inside the intestines, the tapeworm matures and these pieces detach and pass into the feces.

Tick Borne Diseases, as the name suggests are diseases spread by ticks. Unlike fleas, ticks are not insects, but arachnids like spiders, mites and scorpions. Ticks go through a four-stage life cycle, eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults. In the United States Lyme disease is by far the most often reported tick-borne disease in humans and is passed on when bitten by an infected blacklegged tick.

While dogs can pass germs to people, it is not likely you will get sick from touching or owning dogs. The best protection is to wash your hands thoroughly with running water and soap after contact with dogs, dog saliva, or dog stools. Keep your dog healthy and clean, use flea and tick shampoo regularly.

Jock itch (Tinea cruris).

Trichophyton Rubrum is the named fungus behind this condition. It is also primarily responsible for causing athletes foot. Although known mostly in athletic men, it affects just as many females too. Jock itch symptoms include severe itch, mostly on the testicles, inner thighs, and rectum, along with red rash with scaly edges. Rash as a rule develops in the folds of the skin and from here it spreads. Tinea cruris is treated with topical spray and creams, but not every case that use these meds are a success, so the patient will likely need stronger medication from a doctor. Although anti-fungal creams are effective for treating testicle itch, they are not going to be as effective for treating an undiagnosed condition that requires a different approach and medication to cure it. Seek medical attention for a stubborn itch.

Yeast Infection:

Men with itchy testicles often doubt this type of infection being their problem, believing it to be a woman's thing, well it isn't! Yeast infection is usually caused by Candida albicans which is a type of fungus. Symptoms to look out for are irritation, burning, itching, and pain in the groin.

Genital warts

are known to cause itch, but not intense, and supposedly not a painful condition either. Occasional bleeding can occur. Warts can look flat or like cauliflower florets. They can develop singly or grouped. Warts can happen on the anus, but more often found on the penis and under the foreskin. Another location is the urethra where warts can protrude at times.

Psoriasis

symptoms include red or pink patches of thickened skin covered with whitish scales which can be itchy. Uncomplicated psoriasis is not serious as it is annoying, but itch and having to scratch it can cause inflammation and cracks in the skin, and a secondary bacterial infection or fungal infection of the local skin and tissues.

The Faucet Handle is Hard to Turn - Repairing a Single Handle Faucet

It often happens to me as a plumber. After I repair a faucet and the homeowner turns the faucet lever for the first time they are amazed. "The faucet turns so easily!" they exclaim. What is amazing to them is not that the faucet works so easily after repairing, but that they had never noticed that it was not working well until it either leaked terribly, or was impossible to move the handle.

Think about it. You walk into the kitchen or bathroom and, as you have done thousands of times before, you reach for the handle of the faucet and turn on the water. Notice anything? Probably not. The water flows; you turn it off and go on your way. Because you use the faucet everyday, what you don't notice is that gradually the internal parts of the faucet gain a buildup of minerals from the water, and the parts wear. This causes the internal parts to resist movement and thus, the handle is increasingly difficult to move. Think of it as arthritis in the faucet joints.

The good news is that you can save a lot of money by repairing the faucet yourself. Now, don't let plumbing scare you. With a few common tools and some guidance, even the novice can accomplish the task and become a hero to your spouse or friend. Following, I have listed a few simple steps to help you repair a single lever faucet. I am only detailing the repair of a single lever faucet in this article because the steps for repairing this faucet are unique and I don't have the space here to explain a multi lever faucet.

The Faucet Handle is Hard to Turn - Repairing a Single Handle Faucet

Please read the entire article before beginning the repair process. Once you begin the actual repair, you can then refer back to the individual steps to refresh your memory.

Single lever faucet repairing steps:

1) First of all, determine the brand and type of faucet you are repairing; if you can actually locate a brand imprint on the faucet that helps immensely. There are over 100 different brands and makes of faucets, and most of them take different parts. If you can't find a name on the faucet, a great help is a digital camera. Take a picture of the faucet and show the picture to the plumbing supply store clerk. Odds are, when an experienced clerk sees the picture, he or she will know immediately what brand it is.

2) Once you know the faucet brand, or have a photo, you can purchase the necessary repair parts. You can either go to the big box type stores or a local hardware; they each have their own particular strong points. Describe the symptoms of the sick faucet to the clerk. Is the handle difficult to move? Does the faucet leak water around the base of the spout? (Kitchen faucets are notorious for this.) The clerk should know which parts to give you and may save you from having to make multiple trips to the store because you have the wrong parts. If you are repairing a Moen brand faucet, it is a good idea to purchase a "puller" tool to remove the old cartridge. There are differing types of cartridge removal tools; an inexpensive plastic design is available or more expensive heavy duty metal ones. For the homeowner, the cheaper plastic one should work just fine. You can accomplish the faucet repair without one, but using the removal tool makes life a LOT easier. (When making repairs, the lowest priority for me is saving a few cents on parts. I would much rather frequent a store or supplier that stocks a wide variety of quality parts and employs knowledgeable and helpful staff.)

3) TURN OFF THE WATER TO THE FAUCET. Did I emphasis this enough? Before you disassemble the faucet, turn off the water supply. Usually, there are small chrome or brown valves inside the sink cabinet toward the back. If you are like every other American I have ever worked for, the sink cabinet will be packed full and those valves will be buried under every kind of cleaning and shampoo bottle imaginable. Toss in a hair dryer, makeup, spare soap and toothpaste and...well, you get the idea. Dig through the debris and locate the valves. If the valves won't turn easily, you may have to find the main water shut-off valve for the house and turn off the water there. 4) Once the water is off, close the drain stopper on the sink. This little trick was taught me by another plumber over 30 years ago. The reason for this? Most likely, while disassembling the faucet, you are going to drop a small screw or gasket and the closed stopper prevents the small part from disappearing down the drain. Brilliant. Before disassembling the faucet, if you want or need a detailed, illustrated breakdown of your particular faucet and its parts, these illustrations can usually be found on the manufacturer's websites.

5) Remove the handle. There is often a removable plastic lid which covers the handle screw. Pry off the lid and remove the screw. Some handles are attached by a set screw on the side of the handle instead of the top. Look the handle over, with a little investigating, it should be obvious.

6) Once the handle is removed you will see some type of device which secures the replaceable parts in place. Sometimes this is a horseshoe shaped metal clip that slides out. Other times it is a type of round threaded cap that unscrews. Remove the retaining clip or cap.

(Some brands of faucets have a surrounding sheath that encircles the horseshoe clip. This tube needs to be removed first, and then the horseshoe shaped ring can be slid out. To remove the sheath either it is designed to unscrew or to be pulled off by grasping with pliers and pulling toward you. After the sheath is removed grasp the tab of the horseshoe clip with pliers and carefully slid it out by pulling it to the side. These parts should remove easily.)

7) Now, you should see a plastic or brass cartridge that can be removed by pulling it out. If this is a Moen faucet, this is when you use the removal tool. Follow the directions found on the tool packaging. Be careful not to damage the faucet body itself during this process. Some faucet brands contain a plastic or brass ball here instead of a cartridge. Lift or pull this part out. Under the round ball you should see two small rubber seats and springs. Remove them. (In this step, all parts removed should match the new parts which you picked up at the store.)

8) Once the old parts or cartridge are removed, it is a good idea to use a flashlight and peer inside the faucet where the old part used to live. See any pieces of debris or broken pieces of the old cartridge in there? If so, use needle nose pliers to remove it.

9) You can now install the new parts and work your way backwards through the steps as you reassemble the faucet, remembering to replace all retaining clips and rings. If you have any parts left over, take the faucet back apart and figure out where they go before turning the water on. Take your time and you should be just fine

10) This is the most important step. After the faucet is reassembled, the water is back on and you have tested it to make sure it works well, show off your work to your spouse or friends. Watch their reactions as they marvel at how well the faucet works. Now, YOU are the hero, not the plumber you would have had to pay to make the repair.

Basil Care in Winter - 10 Golden Rules

Basil is one of most popular plants in herb gardening around the world, and their flavorful leaves are a wonderful addition to any home cooking. However, for those who do not live in a tropical climate where Basil can thrive all year round and easily reseed themselves, it could be a challenge to keep your Basil growing healthily during the winter months.

Basil is an annual plant. Unless under an optimal condition, it does not survive the next season. However, you can extend the plants' life until the winter months (or even beyond) and enjoy the tastiest leaves based on these simple rules.

1. Collect Seeds. Many seasoned herb gardeners know the secret of pinching away Basil flowers so that the plant can focus all its energy to produce the healthiest, vibrant leaves. However, if you plan to grow basil year after year, it may be wise to let a few basil plants to flower and produce seeds, so you can collect and store them for next year.
What you should do: Let the flower blooms and then withers and turn dry. Then, if you look up from below, you will see tiny black seeds attaching to the dry flower pods. Wait until the flower is dried, then cut them out, put them in a plastic bag and shake it. The seeds will be nicely collected in the bag. Please note that there is no need to shake it too forcefully -- if some of the seeds refuse to detach from the flower, it might mean that they are not fully matured.
2. Transfer Basil Indoors. Basil originates from Central Asia and Africa where the temperature never falls below the 40s. If you live in an area where the temperature can fall below 45F (7C), you should seriously consider transferring your Basil indoors.

3. Give It A Nice Haircut. Before transferring your Basil in pots, it is a good herb gardening practice to prune your plant. There are many advantages: First, during the pruning process, dead or unhealthy leaves and branches are removed and so the nutrients will not be wasted to these unproductive part of the plant. Secondly, a proper pruning ensures good ventilation, which is very important in keeping the basil plant free from fungus and harmful insects. As a general rule, Basil and most herbal plants can be pruned back by one third, and no more than two-thirds.

4. Give It A Nice Shower. This is another simple yet important step in Basil care before winter arrives. A hearty shower to the plants can wash off the insects, larvae and eggs that may have stuck on the Basil leaves. For best results, insecticidal soap can be sprayed on the plant, once a week for a few weeks, before the actual transfer to ensure your Basil is completely free of these annoying little animals.

5 Pick A Bright Spot At Home. Basil is a sun lover, so it is natural that you should place the potted Basil in a sunny spot. You Basil will be happy if they can get 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. An ideal place would be the south and/or west corner which is typically the warmest part of your home.

6. But Not Too Close To The Window. This applies if your windows are not well insulated. While this area is usually the best sunny spot, the Basil can be damaged during the night chill when temperature drops to 40F or below, as the window is usually the least insulated part of your home.

7. Do Not Over-Water. Although Basil needs more water than the Mediterranean herbs (e.g. Rosemary), the herb can't survive over-watering, especially if the soil or pot does not drain well. In particular, don't let the pots sit in saucers full of water for a long period because when the roots cannot breathe they will quickly rot and die.

8. Air Circulation. Many herb gardening practitioners understand the importance of sun and water for the Basil. But most didn't realize that keeping the spot airy is very essential for the health of the plant, especially for growing Basil in pots. Why? Air circulation is naturally poorer in an indoor environment, and your Basil (as well as other herbs and plants) are more succumb to fungal diseases. The solution includes a proper pruning to create more space for each individual leaves, as mentioned in Rule #3. The pots should not be placed too closely to each other for the same reason.

9. Do Not Over-Feed. Basil is not a typical herb in a way that it loves to be fed. Having said that, since its growth decelerates when the summer is over, it is important not to overfeed the plant as it enters its dormant period.

10. Check The Leaves Regularly. Because of its strong flavor, Basil is resistant to most harmful insects, but fungal disease may attack the plants in a cool, stale environment. It is always a good practice to check the leaves regularly for signs of mildews and other diseases, and all the affected leaves and stems should be removed immediately to avoid spreading to the whole plant. By "all" the leaves, I really mean it -- If it means 80% of the plant, so be it! Having said that, if you follow the rules above, your leaves should stay healthy, vibrant and strong for the rest of the months at your home. How to Become a Legal Immigrant - The Green Card and Naturalization

The process for a foreign citizen to legally acquire a green card and eventually become a legal naturalized citizen of the U.S. is difficult, time consuming, and expensive. Many critics of the system maintain that if the process was simpler there would be far fewer foreign citizens entering and remaining in the U.S. illegally.

When a foreign citizen visits the U.S. as a tourist, a medical patient, a student, or for business purposes, they generally need to present only a valid national passport, a photo ID card or birth certificate, and sometimes an entry visa. A visa is simply an endorsement on a document that shows authenticity and conveys permission to travel to and to enter a foreign country. This type of visa is also known as a nonimmigrant visa. Fees for a passport, a nonimmigrant visa, and a border crossing card total about 5.

However, when a foreign citizen wishes to reside and work in the U.S., they need to present an immigrant visa, also known as a green card. The green card was originally called the Alien Registration Receipt Card, but it has recently been renamed the Permanent Resident Card. Originally the card was green in color but now the card is white with some green printing on the back. It is still known generally as the green card. Recipients of the green card must carry it with them at all times. The green card is valid for a period of 10 years.

How to Become a Legal Immigrant - The Green Card and Naturalization

The green card is issued to a foreign citizen as a response to a petition by an employer or a relative who is a U.S. citizen. The petition by the employer or relative allows the foreign citizen to enter the U.S. for the purposes of being employed and residing permanently in the country.

The process for acquiring the green card generally follows three steps. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) issues the green card. This service used to be known as the INS or Immigration and Naturalization Service. USCIS is often referred to as simply the Immigration Service and is now part of the Department of Homeland Security. The first step is for the USCIS to review all of the paperwork and approve the petition from the qualifying relative or employer. The second step is to send the approved paperwork to the National Visa Center (NVC) where the petition waits for a visa number to become available. Only a limited number of visa numbers are available each year. Once a visa number becomes available, then the third step is for the petition to be forwarded to the appropriate U.S. embassy or consulate in the foreign citizen's home city or country.

The three step process appears to be simple and straightforward, but the expenses and the amount of paperwork and time involved make the process difficult and frustrating.

The first step to obtain a green card is for the sponsoring relative or employer to submit the proper forms to USCIS. The process of filling out, collecting, and forwarding the paperwork on to NVC can take two months or more. Typically, not all of the necessary forms are submitted the first time and communication by mail between the USCIS and the petitioner and between the USCIS and NVC is slow. Fees for the paperwork, photos, and supporting documents can total 0 to 0.

Next, NVC collects the paperwork and determines if additional items are needed to complete the application process. There generally are additional necessary forms, passports, and documents needed before everything can be forwarded to a U.S. embassy or consulate in the foreign citizen's home city or country. This process can take two to seven months and requires the payment of processing fees and fingerprinting which cost about 0 or more.

If the petition is for an immediate relative, such as parents, spouses, and minor children, then the application does not need to wait for a visa number, and the petition can be sent on to the U.S. embassy or consulate. Some consulates are busier with green card applications than others and the waiting period for an appointment at the consulate ranges from a couple of weeks to 9 months. In addition to identity documents the applicant must present blood tests and medical exam results which may cost an additional 0 or more. After the appointment at the consulate and the approval of the petition, the foreign citizen is issued the Permanent Resident Card or green card. The citizen is then free to enter the United States for purposes of establishing a residence or beginning employment.

If the petition is for a family member other than an immediate relative, such as adult children, married children, and brothers and sisters, then the application must wait for an Immigrant Visa number to become available. The waiting period may take a few months to as long as 10 years. Only a limited number of Immigrant Visa numbers are available for each country each year. An application may wait for a long period of time if the applicant is from a country which sponsors a large number of applicants. After the petition receives a visa number the application is sent to the U.S. embassy or consulate and the citizen can then complete the appointment and receive their Permanent Resident Card or green card.

The green card is valid for 10 years. After five years of residency in the U.S. the citizen is eligible to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. In addition to the five years of residency, the citizen must show an ability to read, write, and speak English, understand U.S. history and government, have good moral character, and be willing to abide by the principles of the U.S. Constitution. Fees for the application and electronic fingerprinting total about 0. Once the citizen has taken the Oath of Allegiance they become a full U.S. citizen.

Obtaining permanent residency or citizenship in the United States requires a large commitment of time, determination, and resources.
